HMS Fitness Center - financed by HMS STudents and Harrisburg CUSD #3
For the past 11 years, students at HMS have been selling Subway cards to raise enough money to build a fitness center at HMS. They finally raised enough money to begin construction and construction began on April 2, 2013. It was completed and ready for use during the 2016-2017 school year.
The Fitness Center is used each day during P.E. classes at HMS. The boys and girls P.E. classes take turns using it. Not only does this alleviate problems with overcrowding in the gymnasium each hour but it also helps the P.E. and Health teachers at HMS to ensure that all HMS students have an opportunity to be healthy. Students begin each year by learning proper techniques for lifting weights and for using the cardio equipment in the fitness center. Once they have learned proper techniques, students will begin using the equipment.
Recently, the people of Saline County were named the 97th least healthy out of 102 counties in Illinois. HMS would like to partner with different groups in Saline County to help change this. Hopefully, by teaching these middle school students good habits now, it will make them healthier adults!
Now that construction is complete (thanks to help from Harrisburg CUSD #3), we are continuing to fundraise each year to purchase new equipment to be used in the fitness center. See photos of the inside of the completed fitness center below along with some of the equipment purchased by funds raised by our students!
